How to deal with depression in loved ones?

The man that I love and the father of my 3 1/2, Hard of hearing, girl has a sever case of depresion that seem to come and go like a huge emotional roller caster, And I want off of it. But he won't take anything, he won't go and get help, and he won't admit that it's something he can fix. What shoould I do?

my step father is depressed. he won't admit it and never will. he's not on any medication and won't see anyone about it. i met him when i was 6 years old and i'm now a teen in high school. he has made my life miserable. he has 2 sons and a daughter (my half siblings) and he's doing to all of them what he did to me. i hate my step father about 80% of the time. i don't want to, i really don't, but he forces me to. and i KNOW that all of my siblings will feel the same way when they are my age. he either isolates himself or screams and screams at us. he takes out all his anger at us, throws and pushes us around (literally) and is not a very nice man....when he's not having a good day (and his good days are like 1 out of every 30). i obviously don't know but your husband sounds like my step father and i don't want that for your daughter. please please try anything you can do to protect her from that. tell him that you need him to get help and if it comes to this, threaten to leave if he doesn't. he may not seem like that kind of man (and who knows he might not be) but if his depression gets worse, he could become violent or even abusive to you and/or your daughter.

How do you know it is depression? It doesn't sound like he has been diagnosed yet. There are different types of depression. You describe it as "a huge emotional roller coaster that seems to come & go". It sounds like there may be some mania also involved; hard to tell if he refuses to get help.

How much do you care for this man? Is the care there mostly due to having a child with him? Is alcohol involved at all? Are you willing to go through some tenacious & effort-filled times to possibly discover he's too stubborn to even attempt to see a Dr. to keep his family together and happy?

These are Q's you need to answer for you & your daughter. Sometimes it's better in the long run to do the hardest thing now, before it worsens. But, if you TRULY love this man for all the right reasons, pull up your bootstraps & go for it! You are the only one who decides your future... Good luck!
