Whats the difference between depression and clinical depression?

Whats the difference between depression and clinical depression?

Clinical Depression = Depression that is serious enough to require psychiatric intervention and treatment

Depression = a mental state characterized by a pessimistic sense of inadequacy and a despondent lack of activity

Nothing really. There are two types of depression - reactive (which is when u are depressed cos your mum died, you failed your exams etc) and this passes with time with usually a bit of tlc. 'Clinical' depression is normally so-called because you have depression as a diagnosis and are getting some kind of treatment. It doesnt have a specific cause (or it can have a specific cause but then you dont get over it as one normally would)
Even tho i say there are two types, they have the same symptoms, its just that they are classed and generally dealt with differently

It might be argued that they are the same and many doctors use them to describe the same state. However depression is used in the community much more loosely and often refers simply to transient mood states. Clinical depression would perhaps be used to describe a patient who suffers from endogenous or biochemical depression as measured by one of the numerous rating scales used by clinicians, I was most used to using the 'Hamilton Rating Scale.'

There isnt one really. I had depression 4 years ago. i was told i was "clinically depressed" All that means is i was diagnosed with it after several assessments. Another way to explain it is, if the depression fits thats in text books (which it generally does, low self esteem, lack of motivation, being iractional etc) then thats how they diagnose you.My husband now works in a hospital for mentally ill patients and clinical just means a clinic aka doctor has confirmed the depression. Some say clinical is worse, well it isnt, its the same thing really.

The short answer is that Clinical depression is MUCH WORSE than depression.

Depression - a general term for feeling low, sad, unmotivated, lethargic etc.

Clinical depression - a recognized mental illness, caused by imbalances of chemicals in the brain that leads the sufferer to loose logic, and crash into such low places that it sometimes prompts suicide.

Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Clinical depression is when you get lower and lower until you get to the bottom. You become hopeless and helpless and life means nothing. I've been there. A lot of crazy things happen when you are on the bottom. You can be psychotic and have paranoia. Suicidal thoughts are there all the time even if you don't even want to. Usually it takes a strong drug or cocktail of drugs to snap you out of it. You may have a period of low grade depression after that. It's a battle to get on the upside of life. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a great place to start healing. There are a lot of other mental tools to beat depression. Youtube has a lot of help if you know what key words to type in. The term 'clinical depression' is generally used to refer to true depression and distinguish it from the term 'depression' which is so easily thrown around. Someone might be a bit upset, tired and hungry and say 'i'm so depressed' when they technically aren't depressed. Clinical depression is true, physical depression that can be diagnosed.

Depression is a potentially temporary emotion. Clinical depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.

clinical depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the body so i assume can,t be helped by psycologist or psychiatrist but more by medication

depression is what u think clinical is when the doctor agrees

your pathetic
