What is the easiest way to relieve depression without taking any pills or medication?

I would prefer if you could provide more tips or provide any personal experience regarding this. Thanks in advance.

Although it may be the HARDEST thing to do, get busy! It doesn't matter what you do, as long as you move in any direction that does not let you become preoccupied with being depressed. It can be something so simple as going to the grocery store just to have a complete stranger smile back at you, or talking a walk in your neighborhood. Get the proper rest and eat properly as well. Go make yourself do something you think is fun, even going to a movie you've been wanting to see or reading a great book. It doesn't have to be expensive. Even snapping pics of kids or dogs playing in a park causes you to focus on something other than whatever is causing your depression. When your mind becomes stronger, you'll be able to figure out a solution to whatever is causing your depression. Sitting around thinking about it just makes you more depressed.

Kelly this is an age old question that's been asked by many, know by few. I have been disabled and in severe pain for 14 years now. I have been on every type of pill you can think of to ward off the pain which at time is so severe I cry in my wife's arms.
I have to admit I take two pills for depression, they help, my family helps and the hobbies I have help but, no one but yourself can stop the depression. I have been to consulars but they only listen, they don't give advise.
Find someone that's close to you that understands without some form of payment that can listen to you, maybe at times give some support in advise. This will be the friend you can count on. Go with God my friend.

Three coping strategies-

Fake it 'til ya make it! Actually "pretend" to feel ok, act as though you feel ok, remember or draw upon what your goals or daily activities were before the depression and fake it- go through the motions. Oddly, you end up at the end of the day, feeling better. Our emotions often follow or actions... which brings me to...

Action! I have always been told that the best reaction to depression is action- get moving, exercise, complete a task, no matter how small and tell your self that you will be satisfied if you only complete this task-then let it go!

Another trick is to end or nip your "self speak". When a negative thought starts to spiral or feed into overwhelming thoughts- find where it starts and end the spiral. I tell myself- "this is only an emotion, all emotions pass, an emotion can not harm or control me, emotions in and of themselves have no power!"

This really works for me, I hope you find these coping strategies helpful, although, they do not take the place of great therapy!

Psychotherapy, if it's rather severe. Pills aren't the best way anyway.
Meditation, yoga, tai chi, and other relaxation techniques may help.
Some people get better when exercising, but that doesn't work for everyone.
The hardest part is breaking your bad habits, the not getting out of the house, not doing anything, thinking bad things about yourself or your life. Counteract them by doing the exact opposite. This is difficult though and you might need someone's help with that.

exercise, sunshine, eating well. drugs and alcohol really do make it worse. also, making yourself get up and do something, anything, particularly with other people. it's really hard to get motivated when you're depressed, but forcing yourself into situations where you can't sit and mope the whole time really does help.

exercise...it releases endorphins...basically it helps with the chemistry in your brain....also keeping a journal is a good way to help. I've been to shrinks since I was 13 (28now) and those 2 things are always at the top of the list of things to do.

I have found that walking at least an hour a day helps me out alot. I listen to my Ipod and just relax.

I also notice that when I feel myself panicking or starting to stress about things I clean. Cleaning really seems to calm me down.

Find something to do. Weather it be volunteer work, get a job, or anything of that sort. Keeping busy is the best depression buster I have ever found.
