When can we expect a cure for type 1 diabetes?

If at all? And I mean a proper tested cure avalible to the public.

It's been "around the corner" for years. I don't expect a cure any time soon, but companies are getting closer and closer to an "artificial pancreas". The idea is to have a unit that can test sugar and provide appropriate insulin automatically. That will be close to a cure. Stem cell research may provide good treatment options someday, but that research is in its infancy.
To help find a cure, participate in JDRF fundraising events as much as possible. This doesn't have to cost you a cent, because they are always looking for volunteers to work at the events.

In about 20-30 years -- IF current research works out.

There was a discovery recently that CURED diabetes IN MICE using ADULT stem cells. This discovery culminated many years of research.

Now, these experiments need to be duplicated by other laboratories. these other labs will check the scientific methodology and repeat the experiments to see if THEY get the same results. this will take several more years.

IF the experiments are accurate, then methods of gathering stem cells from HUMANS need to be developed, and methods of re-applying them to the pancreas need to be developed. add a few more years of research.

Once this step is complete, it should be possible to go into Clinical Human Trials. This means that the companies will ask for human volunteers to undergo treatment. these volunteers will be tracked for several years -- maybe 10-15 year or longer. It wouldn't do any good to find out the diabetes can be cured in 6 months, but the patients die in 2 years!

IF, after all this work, the process proves to be useful and effective in humans, then the copmpanies have to apply to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the necessary approvals to sell the treatment. Given the potential to damage lives, this approval process will be LONG and very difficult. it may be another 5-10 years to get FDA approval.

FINALLY, after all approvals are received, ONLY THEN can the treatment be made available to the general public.

All together, this process may take 20-30 YEARS before a cure is available -- and then, that assumes that what works on MICE also works inMEN. There is a very high possibility that the experiments will fail in humans -- and then we're right back to Square One.

the lack of cure TODAY is not because no body is doing anything, it is because it take a LONG time to properly find, test, and approve a cure that is both effective AND safe.

It's anybody's guess, but let's just say that a cure has been "right around the corner" for the whole 25 years that I've been Type 1, and long before that. You need to plan to have Type 1 for your entire life and adjust accordingly. I take heart that future generations might benefit from a cure, but it's too late for our generation. Beta cell transplants show some promise, but the body still continues to destroy them, so it would not be a "cure", just a treatment.

Confucious says.....in one year

canno be cured

It cannot be cured. It can be controlled by diet and exercise.
