Tx for diabetes until I can see a doctor?

I've has excessive thirst for about a week. I realize that is a symptom of diabetes. I don't have insurance but do have a doctor appointment next month.

Here's what I have been doing so far, I've change to a low carb diet (just yesterday), been drinking lots of water and have started drinking sugarless sport drink to replace electrolytes.

Anything else I should be doing?

I would suggest going to your local library and checking out a copy of the Atkins diet to ensure that you are doing it correctly...

As for the "sugarless" sports drink, read the label to ensure that it does not contain carbs... something can be sugarless but still contain carbs that will throw off a low carb diet...

Good luck...

Do some exercise every day. That is also good for lowering blood sugar. Don't go nuts with the water, because it will just make you urinate even more. Do a Google search on the glycemic index scale and eat more food with a low value. Do not try to completely eliminate carbs because that is your body's fuel.
IF you are diagnosed with diabetes, make an appt with an endocrinologist. An endocrine doctor has more education and more tools available to treat diabetes.

Follow these 4 rules when eating:
1) Eat less food. women should eat 1500 calories; men should eat 2000 calories.
2) Eat more fruits and vegetables. Eat 5 servings a day and introduce green leafy vegetables into your diet. (a medium apple is one serving; half cup of vegetables is one serving).
3) Eat food, not chemicals. Avoid processed foods. It has too much salt, fat and other "things" you don't need.
4) If God made it, it is OK. Fresh ground hamburgers (lean) are fine; bologna, salami, hot dogs are not. Pork chops are fine, sausages are not.

The other part of the equaiton is start exercising. Exercise 30 minutes a day, minimum 5 days a week.

Of course limit your sugar and white flour (bread, pasta, etc) intake.

I've followed thee rules since Jan. 2007 and have lost over 50 pounds and have kept it off for over a year. A1c dropped from 11.0 to 6.3 and my doctor is talking about stopping my metformin the next visit.

Exercise!! walking for an hour each day as fast as you can will do more for the potential diabetes Rx than anything else other than doing the low carb food plan.

Not sure why you think you need to replace the electrolytes. Plain water is what is recommended by most physicians.

My doctor yells at me that I am not drinking enough plain water. She doesn't think it should have any juices or other flavorings added at all expecially tea or coffee flavorings.

Be sure to add in a very small "cheat treat" to each week! This keeps you sane and not craving a thing. It is NOT cheating it is treating, but must be kept to half a serving! It prevents the over indulgence like eating the whole chocolate cake rather than a very small sliver of it.
That is advice from my endo on coping!

If you are diabetic then you really need to know without waiting a month. I would suggest that you either go online or to some store like Walmart and pick up a cheap blood glucose meter, you can get one for under twenty bucks, or even free if you go online, however, you really probably shouldn't wait for it to be delivered. If your sugar is over 160 it definitely needs to be checked out and 160 is on the high side.

Stay away from the sugarless sports drinks unless you workout and need to replace your electrolytees.
Most local Health Departments can screen for diabetes by pricking your finger and testing your blood. It is quick and simple but needs to be done while you are fasting.

You should also add cinnamon to your food and tea whenever you can. It helps to lower blood sugar.
