men are are the cause if you ask me...

to the last poster, men have image issues too. Partially because of medai and partially because of women. Eating disorders are somewhat caused by media portrayal of women, but alot of other things can cause them too. My wife has one and it has nothing to do media perception. You will find that most anorexics are perfectionists and when things in their lives are out of control they turn to the one thing they can control, what they put in their mouth. It is a very deep psycological problem, you jsut see the results in the their body.

No. The media may induce pressure for eating disorder behavior, but I'd point the finger to general insecurity and low self-esteem for actually causing it. A perfectly happy, secure, loved, and healthy person is not going to immediately starve themself after seeing a picture of Keira Knightly or Mary Kate Olsen. There has to be pre-existing issues for someone to fall into that trap. Maybe their parents never told them they were good enough, maybe they're severely depressed, maybe... whatever. But a perfectly emotionally and mentally fit person will not succumb to the "voted sexiest woman in the world" being a size 0 if she herself already feels sexy and secure at a size 8. Get me?

The media makes money by showing ads that promote "beauty"-in other words thinness. the media should be open minded when it comes to weight. there is nothing beautiful about eating disorders. it sends the wrong message.

I don't think they are necessarily the cause, but I definitely think that they are contributors to the growing issue of more and more young adults having an eating disorder.

nope they are not. eating disorders are phychologic and way more complex then just wishing oneself was "thinner".
people just always need something to blame something on...

The media is the cause of all image-related problems.
