11 month old with GERD?

My 11month old is getting tested for GERD after being failure to thrive for weight. She is 15lbs 11oz. She has had a red throat and chest spasms while lying down or reclined. She also has fluid in her ears. She wakes up at night constantly(10-15 times). Going to specialist on the 17th. Just wondering anyone elses thoughts. She doesn't vommit or spit up could it bw a mal absorbtion problem?

my now 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with malabsorption when she was 6 weeks old... it realy doesnt sound like this.. with malabsorption, the silia (the little hairs inside the intestine) are not there.. and therefor.. the babyu cannot absorb the neutrients in the food.. the vomit all the time, projectile.. also.. one of the signs (and i really dont know why) is that their toes arent normal.. for instance.. the big toe is up a little, the next toe down.. and so on... kids with malabsorption have trouble walking because of this.. i hope u find out what is wrong with your daughter, but mine spent 12 weeks in the hospital.. and being 10 years old.. she is on 38 pounds to this day! but, she is helathy now! good luck to you, but it really dont sound like thats the problem.

Could be both. One of the bad things about GERD is that it can be passive, meaning that the spit up is swallowed again, so you would never know. If her throat is red, it is possible she simply doesn't eat as much as she should because it hurts. Babies with GERD tend to cry when nursing and sometimes refuse to eat. If there is an issue with her upper digestive tract, it could be possible it has affected her lower and the ability for her to absorb nutrients. I am no expert and it is good your seeing a specialist. Things you can do to help are to keep up right for 30 to 60 minutes after meals and have her sleep on an incline. This might be hard to do with an 11 month old.

Does she eat well when you feed her? If she is and not gaining weight, it can be an absorption problem. My baby is 12 months and almost 16 lbs. She fell below the growth curve and so they are worried. She won't eat solids and has recently refused her bottles also. She will take a bottle here and there but def. not enough to gain weight. Basically she is taking the minimum required to survive. Don't worry too much. There are tests they can run to see what the problem is. My daughter has seen a dietitian and will be seeing a speech pathologist in a few weeks. They might do a barium swallow on your little girl to see if the food she swallows end up going back up. The GI specialist might put a scope down her throat also to take a look but that's pretty rare because there are so many other diagnostic tests they can do instead. Good luck and keep your head up. Before you know it, you will be passed all of this. I'll keep you and your daughter in my prayers.

hon, don't obsess; it could be a variety of things, but at least you are doing what you can to find the prob and fix it; that's what is important....keep your chin up, it will get better..
