How long does the hepatitis b vaccine last?

How long does the hepatitis b vaccine last?

Although it's true that theoretically a hep B series is for life, this isn't always true in reality. There's a thing called immunologic memory and it's defined as "the capacity of the body's immune system to remember an encounter with an antigen due to the activation of B cells or T cells having specificity for the antigen and to react more swiftly to the antigen by means of these activated cells in a later encounter".

Studies indicate that immunologic memory remains intact for at least 23 years and confers protection against clinical illness and chronic HBV infection, even though anti-HBs levels might become low or decline below detectable levels. So, the hep B series should be effective for approximately 23 years.

It's supposed to be for a life time, but that's not true for all people.
Recently, myself and 2 other EMT had a pt. who was pos. of HIV and Hep. B spit in our faces during a 302 commitment(involuntary) during the subsequent testing for accidental exposure it was found that 1 of the others needed a booster shot and now needs to get one every 10yrs.

If I am not mistaken, they, as of now, say it doesn't have to be repeated.
