Is it normal for my 2 year old to have a fever and diahhrea after the Hepatitis A vaccine?

My son had the hep A vaccine on Wed on Friday he came down with a fever and diahrea and still has a fever Saturday night. Is this normal?

This is a link to the CDC's vaccine information statement regarding the Hepatitis A vaccine (According to federal law, you should have been given one before your son received the vaccine, although not all doctor's offices comply with this law):

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/dow...

Normal/mild side effects associated with the vaccine are:
- soreness where the shot was given (about 1 out of 2 adults, and up to 1 out of 6 children)
-headache (about 1 out of 6 adults and 1 out of 25 children)
- loss of appetite (about 1 out of 12 children)
- tiredness (about 1 out of 14 adults)

Mild to moderate fever is common with HBV (Hep B), but not Hep A.

Moderate to severe reactions to Hep A vaccination include high fever or behavior changes. Please read the information brochure to check for other signs of allergic reaction to look for, call your doctor, and document your son's reaction in case you need to refer to it in the future. Include the date he received the shot and his reaction to it.

On a not so urgent note, all four of my children experienced slight fever and diarrhea with teething (despite the fact that pediatricians insist babies don't have these symptoms as part of teething). My prayer is that your son's symptoms are related to something else, and it's only a coincidence that he just had the vaccine.

It were from the vaccine, that would be a shame, since the actual disease is often so mild that it causes no symptoms at all in children that age.

Good luck getting his doctor to admit it could be from the vaccine. It might just be a coincidence, but it also could be from the vaccine. There's no way to know for sure.

I recommend you report this to VAERS. http://vaers.hhs.gov/pdf/VAERS_brochure....

I would call your doctor and tell them about the symptoms because he's either having a bad reaction to it, or he's gotten sick. But either way.. yeah..
