What treatments are available in UK for dog incontinence? |
My female dog has had this problem he whole life, but it has become worse since being spayed. I imagine the meds are the same in the UK as they are in the US. There are 2 meds commonly used for female canine incontinence. One is Phenylpropanolamine (PPA), it's a decongestant, brand name is Proin & the other is Diethylstilbestrol (DES) a synthetic estrogen. You can research the drugs on line & read about side effects. Yes, once the dogs are on meds they do need to take them their whole life. I don't know if there are any surgical procedures to treat female incontinence in dogs. My vet has never mentioned them if there is. About the only alternative is to live with the incontinence. Use pads to cover beds & such or have the dog wear diapers. I know a female sheltie that her skin was scalded in the back, like a raw diaper rash from constant leaking. So sometimes meds are the best choice. My one spayed BC girl has had issues with incontinence since she was 3. It has gotten worse with age. She's 9 1/2 now. It got bad enough we put her on meds about a year ago. We started with Proin. She was still having problems on a low dose. I didn't like how nervous she got on the higher dosages. We put her on DES. You build up a blood level & then cut the dosing back. She takes a pill 2x a week only. Works great. No problems since. We did need to get followup bloodwork done, apparently it can cause bone marrow depression & anemia or low platelet counts. Not much of a risk with very low dosage. Hope this helps some. incontinence is not painful at all to the dog, and many drugs can hurt her more than help. my brothers dog has bin incontinent for last three years but has been on tablets for the last two and shows no bad effects compared to the distress she used to show when she could not control her bladder and would run around the room crying because she was trying to get outside every two minutes so she was constantly distressed so we think the good outweighes the bad for her quality of life plus she is 10. |
