Generally this surgery is only suitable for women who leak because the base of the bladder is weak. Women with stress incontinence are unlikely to benefit from a TVT operation. The cause of urine leakage would first have to be determined by performing urodynamics. TVT is usually not recommended for a woman who want to have a future pregnancy.

You will usually be given a general anaesthetic. The procedure works by supporting the urethra with a tape. The tape has a long needle at either end. An incision is made in the vagina underneath the urethra and bottom of the abdomen .The needles are passed upwards from the vagina so that the tape comes to lie underneath the urethra.The tape is then placed in the correct position and the needles are removed.

Dissolving stitches are placed in the incisions, which can take up to 6 weeks to dissolve. In most cases the surgery helps and does not cause any long term problems.

It can stand for either Tension-free Vaginal Tape or Trans-Vaginal Tape. These are identical operations
