Irritable Bowel Syndrome Question? |
I have been diagnosed with IBS recently. Although colonoscopy and other tests came normal, it hardly means I am alright. I suffer a lot from chronic abdominal pains, constipation, diarrhea, food reactions, etc etc. I understand your situation completely! I had a similar situation, one Dr. told me "eat as much fiber as possible!" which sent my intestines into an uproar, so a different Dr. told me, "avoid fiber at all costs!" !!! Confusing to say the least! The best thing for you to do is to follow the "elimination diet" which is designed to avoid any foods that may trigger irritating or allergic responses that worsen or cause your symptoms. It is important to follow the diet very carefully and be sure to check all food labels, even condiments, to look for ingredients that might irritate you. After following the diet for a month you are meant to add back in foods that you suspect cause problems for you ONE at a time. It takes time and effort but will be well worth the end result which is to minimize or even stop your symptoms all together. I find it odd that your gastroenterologist told you to eat wheat if you know it triggers your symptoms. There are so many alternatives to wheat! Fiber can be found in many sources that may be less irritating to your intestines, fresh fruits, oatmeal, whole grain brown rice......combined with drinking lots of water and being sure to get some daily exercise (even a 20 minute walk in the morning) will keep you from becoming constipated. Good luck. it could be something besides IBS. Have you tried an antidepressant? Anxiety causes a lot of ibs and antidepressants usually help a lot. Even if you don't think you are anxious, antidepressants help. They regulate serotonin not just in the brain. The intestines depend on serotonin also. |
