How do tongue piercings impact oral health?

Is it true that tongue piercings negatively impact the dental gums, or are there other consequences worth knowing? Thank you.

THERE ARE SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH A TONGUE PIERCING IN PARTICULAR. THE MOST COMMON IN SOME PATIENTS I SEE IS BREAKING OF A BACK TOOTH.
THIS OCCURS WHEN THE PERSON BITES HARD ON THE METAL STUD HOLDING THE BARBEL.
THE SECOND MORE SERIOUS PROBLEM IS NERVE DAMAGE AND INFECTION OF THE TONGUE.

Think about this: would you brush your teeth with sand? probably not, so why would you get a tongue piercing? basically, a tongue piercing strips your teeth of enamel, and chips your teeth, just like brushing your teeth with sand would. it also wears away your gums, and also may pose a choking hazard. also, you may get an infection that could spread to your brain. check it out on google, but be warned, the pics and stories are gross!

Ask anyone who has a tongue ring...most will tell you they have chipped at least one of their teeth from biting down on the ball. Also unless you take it out everyday and clean it thoroughly, you will get a builup of goo in the thread of the screws.
