Ehler-Danlos Syndrome : Pain Management Questions?

I am a 24 year old male, healthy, and in pain. I had surgery two months ago for bi-lateral carpal tunnel, left wrist was worked on and still have it in my right. The surgery did not help and made the pain worse actually. My doctor has since diagnosed me with Ehler-Danlos Syndrome.

I have been on medication for over three years for pain, starting with darvocet, through vicodin 5, 10, percocet 5, and now percocet 10.

I am constantly being woken up at night due to pain, and have to take my medication, then wait for it to work before I can fall back asleep. I haven't had a good nights sleep in longer then I can remember.

I am trying to think of options I may have to manage my pain, and was seeing if anyone might have any better ideas that I could discuss with my doctor tomarro.

Thanks in advance.

You need to request a referral to a pain management specialist. Unfortunately, in this condition, analgesic medications are commonly poorly prescribed.

As you know this is a genetic disorder which at this time has no cure. However, you are being given medications which are designed for short-term pain conditions.

If you have a chronic pain syndrome, and have no expectation of a short-term remedy, then a long term pain program should be developed.

Also, in an attempt to decrease further pain, a continued physical therapy program needs to be developed.

I'm sure you have a fine physician, but you need a specialist in all the issues related to your care.

Also since you have this condition, some consideration should be placed on support services, such as support groups, and even mental health counseling so you can manage the stress related to a chronic condition.

I pray you find relief.
