Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and weight loss...?

I was diagnosed with PCOS last year and I'm 16. My Doctor didn't tell me much about it except that women with PCOS tend to be a bit overweight. I've always noticed that I carry a bit of weight on my stomach and I can't seem to shed it easily no matter how much weight I lose. I've cut out chocolate, crisps, sweets, fizzy drinks, cakes etc. in a bid to lose weight again but will I ever lose this flabby belly?!

I weigh 8 and a half stone and I'm 5'1".

Women with PCOS are more prone to being overweigh 4 in 10 women with PCOS are overweight or obese. You said you are 5"1 and 8.5 stone, you are not overweight. Your BMI is 22.4! You are within normal range.

It sounds like you just need to tone up. Do exercise- at least 5 hours a week. See if you can go to a gym, explain the area of your body that needs working on and the gym instructors will show you what equipment to use.

Dear,

yes as ur doc told you, PCOS causes some extra wt, because of the hormones, extra androgen's, and water retention, so your extra weight is not 100% fat, but there is water also.
so how can you decrease that ? by taking the appropriate management for PCOS, ( metformin + the pill ) of course from your doctor, and after that don't expect your weight to drop without exercise and diet. and it will go down gradually

best luck

PCOS does cause weight to go around the midsection. The theories are insulin resistance and/or androgens. If I take an anti androgen such as Spiro or Dianette, my stomach flattens. Not everyone with PCOS responds this way to an anti androgen though.

Unfortunately, belly fat can go along with PCOS. Just continue to eat healthy and try to exercise (cardio and ab workouts), and it should decrease over time. I know how frustrating it is though. Good luck.

It's a pain losing weight with PCOS, I won't lie to you! I was 4 stones overweight and I'm only 5'2". A lot of the extra weight I carried around my stomach/waist - very common for women who have PCOS.

What type of 'diet' are you following?

I tried everything, Atkins, Weightwatchers, Beachbody, Cabbage Soup, you name it, I've tried it.
The only 'diet' which works for women with PCOS is a Low Gi diet - which is followed for life, I might add.

There's good information on this site about foods which have a Low GI content (the foods you should be eating) and foods which are high in GI, you should avoid:
http://www.the-gi-diet.org/lowgifoods/
http://www.pcosmatters.com/index.php?opt...

This book is also very good:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Low-GI-Guide-Man...
Somewhat pricey, I got mine for 拢10, but it's definitely one of those information books which you can keep and always refer back to, if needs be.

We (as women with PCOS) need to workout a lot more too! Instead of doing 3 workouts per week, up it to 5 and do resistance training between your workout days; even if you only do the resistance training for a few months it does burn fat and build muscle.

Hopefully that has helped, feel free to email me with any other questions.
