Took Plan B, then got + Pregnancy test, then two days later, a Negative test. Did the Plan B abort?

I took Plan B two days after sex. It was late in my cycle.. four days before my period was due. My period was four days late and my breasts hurt and I was famished. (I have four kids, I know what it feels like to be preg.!). The Pregnancy tests were positive. (I took three because I was incredulous) Then five days later, my symptoms disappeared and the pregnancy test was negative. Did the Plan B cause me to miscarry? I am passing tan tissue, but no blood. Should I see a doctor?

Lots of misinformation on Plan B. The word abort is too politically charged for me to deal with - but I will tell you happened.

Plan B works by not allowing a fertilized egg (if there is one) to attach to the uterus wall. Once there is a fertilized egg, there can be pregnancy hormones.

The loaded question you asked... I won't answer that part, but if there was a fertilized egg, the plan B does prevent it from attaching to the uterine lining.

good luck!

ps - this all could have been co-incidence. You were already late in your cycle. You probably wouldn't have conceived anyway.

With the really good hpt's today, you probably could detect many 'chemical' pregnancies where the egg fertilizes, but for some reason doesn't stick to uterus wall or miscarries very, very early.

NO plan B is not an abortion, geez where did that guy get his info? Okay I know because I like to be informed in my girlfriend's health, and she has had to take plan B in the past. This is what the information packet inside the box said (abbreviated of course): you can only effectively take plan B within three days of having unprotected sex, after 72 hours, the effectiveness rapidly decreases. The reason for this is because the pill basically prevents the egg from fertilizing and latching on to the uterus wall. When the fertilized egg lands on the uterus wall, thats it your pregnant. So basically plan B is the same thing as birth control, it works the exact same way, but faster. Hence "plan B".
That being said I am not a doctor I don't know about what is going on with you, so I would see a doctor. That is the only way to know for sure. But don't worry, if you were ALREADY pregnant (the egg attached to the uterus wall), then plan B would NOT work... that is why you must work quickly to take the pill.

Although it's sad to hear,

Plan B isn't a pregnancy PREVENTION.. It's a form of abortion. It's even listed in the FAQ of planned parenthood's website.

:( sorry

I was wondering the same thing, however, what has been said is false on one thing: the pregnancy hormone hcg is NOT produced when the egg is fertilized. It's produced when the egg implants into the uterine wall. Which means that if Plan B had prevented the egg (technically a zygote or blastocyst or something at this point, isn't it?) from attaching to the uterine wall, you would not have gotten a positive test. In addition to this, it has to be implanted for at least a few days in order to produce enough to show up on a home pregnancy test.

I've heard that Plan B makes the egg less likely to implant, but once it's implanted, it doesn't work. I've done some reading recently on the effects of progesterone, and it's a high level of progesterone (30 or more) that sustains the pregnancy until the placenta begins secreting hcg. And it's a lack of progesterone, which is what's in Plan B, which causes the uterine lining to begin to shed. It starts getting a little more complex, but from what I can tell it could probably help sustain a pregnancy a little longer if the egg implants.

the morning after pill as i assume your refering to, doesnt usually cause an abortion.
it prevents or delays ovulation and if an egg is fertilised, stops it from being able to implant in the wall of the uterus.
however the other thing it does is stops the production of homones necessary for the pregnancy to continue, so possibly if the other two methods failed, which is quite possible as you took it quite late, as it is mostly only effective for the first 72 hours after unprotected sex, this could have been what happened, maybe the egg had a chance to be fertilised, but was miscarried after the hormones that were necessary were used up or had disappeared.

the only other thing that can cause a pregnancy test to wrongly say positive OTHER than pregnancy is the hormones that are left in the body temporarily after an abortion, so i would have to assume you were pregnant, which would lead me to think that now you are NOT, and are passing tissue, you could have had an early miscarriage.

talk to you doctor, they will know exactly what has happened, and if you have had a miscarriage you may need to talk to them anyway.

what i think i am saying, is it couldnt hurt. what could happen? you either get re-assurance that what has happened was all a coincidence, or find out you had a miscarriage, in which case you would have been best off to get a check up anyway.

good luck and let us know what happened
