Does a lower dose of Birth Control mean a higher risk for pregnancy?

I used to use Lutera, which was a low dose. Then the next month, they switched me over to TriNessa, which is a lot higher of a dose. Well, TriNessa makes me get sick all the time. I want to switch back to Lutera, but I feel safer on TriNess because the dose is higher.

Does it matter what dose it is really?

The dosage refers to the amount of estrogen in the pill's hormonal combo. It's actually the progestin that is necessary to prevent pregnancy. The estrogen is there to help balance things. The term low dose came about because the early (1960's era) pills contained a lot more estrogen- about twice as much as today's versions, like yours does. With low dose pills, you lower the risk of the undesirable side effects like weight gain and mood swings- as well as those other ugly ones like strokes and blood clots. However, if a dose is too low you can also have more trouble with breakthrough bleeding. Even when that happens, you are still protected from pregnancy as long as you were taking one a day. TriNessa, the generic form of Ortho Tri Cyclin, is associated with nausea, which is not a problem with Lutera usually. If you have been taking the TriNessa for fewer than 3 packs, there is a good possibility that your system will adapt and the nausea won't continue to be a problem. However, if you can't stand it anymore, just go back to see your doctor. Whatever type you both determine is best will work for you. There are many different formulations of birth control pills just for this reason- no one pill fits all ladies.

Some contraceptive pills do a have a higher FAILURE rate. I was put onto a lower dosage pill because the hormone levels were too high in the previous one and, like you, it made me really sick!
I don't want to scare you but I then went on to get pregnant while taking the lower dosage one. If I was you, I would go to your doctor and discuss with him/her the risks. No one had told me about them but I wish they had now! I am on a better pill now which is a good balance of hormones, and doesn't make me sick.

it doesn't matter. they approved both kinds for 99% effective birth control, and they wouldn't have approved Lutera if it wasn't.
