How to help a friend with schizophrenia who is now homeless? |
One of my friends starting having problems a few years ago and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He seems normal enough when he is on his medication but he only takes it until he stops having delusions and then goes off it. He says it makes him feel like zombie. He quit taking it last year and he is completely out of touch with reality now. His sister is the only person in his family who wants to help but she has three children and can't have him at her house because it might not be safe for her kids. His mom knows that he is sick but she is really narcissistic and doesn't care what happens to him. She convinced him to sign something that would give her control of his assets and she bought his house from him for next to nothing. She recently kicked him out of the house so that she could sell it and make a large profit. He is now on the street and now that his mom sucked him dry she doesn't seem to care what happens to him. She has made no effort to get him the mental help that he needs. Thanks, that's the dilemma though. He refuses to see his doctor or go back on his medication because he's so far gone that he believes he isn't really sick and that his delusions are real. In addition to what has already been said, I'd highly recommend you read the book, "Surviving Schizophrenia: A Manual for Families, Patients, and Providers" by E. Fuller Torrey, Fifth Edition. I know Barnes & Noble has it. Amazon.com only has the 4th edition. That is very good reading and tells a lot about schizophrenia, and how to deal with the issues relating to it. It is a must-have book if you are considering having your friend live with you. If I were in your shoes...I would tell my friend that they could stay with me, if they agreed to take their medication...period... Tell him that you will only accept him into your home IF he goes onto his meds, otherwise he needs to look at a shelter for accommodation. You are a brave man.God bless you |
