If my mom has Schizophrenia and so does her father, what chance do I have of inheriting it? |
When I was four years old, I was taken away from my mom because "she wasn't fit to take care of me." I am 15 years old now and recently was told about what my mom has. I am worried that I may have a chance of getting the disease. She is not the only family member that I have with it. My grandfather on my moms side, my mom, and two aunts on my dads side. You do have a higher chance then someone with no relatives having it. There are known genetic links to it. However there also seems to be a mechanism that the gene has to be turned on, so even though you probably have around a 50% chance of having the gene, you only have about 20% chance of both having the gene and having it turned on. Also, childhood trauma and stress seems to be one major trigger in turning on the genes for mental illnesses like that, so it may be to your advantage to have been removed from her care if she was that unfit to care for you. Yes but you won't know you have it until someone tells you. I suggest you consult a doctor and get some psychological tests done to confirm or deny. Unfortunately, even this is not definitive as it may not start to affect you till your late 40's or an event that over-stresses you. A lot of mental illnesses are heredity. Well, yes and no. Yes, you do. Very very much so...... 0% It is not inherited. For free paper on topic email me. |
