What is the difference between schizophrenia and false memory syndrome?

i'd like to know what the difference is between mild schizophrenia and FMS. also, will anti-psychotic medications treat FMS?

As far as I understand it, there is almost nothing similar between the two. Of course, I know much more about schizophrenia than I do about false memory syndrome.

FMS mainly pertains to false memories about childhood sexual abuse. It means that you have a memory that never really happened. I think you can get false memories if you are seriously provoked by a therapist, telling you what to remember, you begin to remember what they think your memory was.

Schizophrenia is a mental illness. You may have delusions or hallucinations, and those are happening now, and you believe they are real and you are in the midst of them. Schizophrenia makes it difficult to think and organize your thoughts and communicate. It does other things, but for the sake of your question, I don't think it is necessary to mention them.

Although I think most false memories do not count as delusions (like the child abuse ones), some are more difficult to determine. For instance, when you get into the realm of memories of alien abduction, it is difficult to determine whether it is schizophrenia or an actual false memory.

I doubt that anti-psychotics can treat FMS, because a false memory is not really a delusion, more of a mistake (in my opinion), or sometimes something implanted in your mind by an external source.

FMS is defined as:

"A condition in which a person's identity and interpersonal relationships are centered around a memory of traumatic experience which is objectively false but in which the person strongly believes. Note that the syndrome is not characterized by false memories as such. We all have memories that are inaccurate."

Schizophrenia is defined as:

"A psychosis characterized by personality and thought disorganization. There may be hallucinations and delusions, and "negative" symptoms such as lack of speech, expressionless or unemotional demeanor, lack of speech and thinking deficits such as poor memory, problems carrying tasks to achieve a goal and an inability to focus attention."

I've never met anyone with "mild" schizophrenia and I've known several people. They may think in a paranoid state that you have lied to them but typically it involves a recent or current event. The paranoia takes over very suddenly.

A schizophrenic may think they were someone famous or important in the past or present but that's not a false memory but rather a delusional thought. FMS is usually triggered by trauma and often involves accusing family members of unspeakable acts.

Whether or not a medication will work depends on the exact diagnosis and individual person. A lot of medications have dual purposes and can be used to treat more than one type of condition.
