Wow FOUR times higher chance of being an alcoholic, and with his drug abuse it even adds a higher chance that Obama will be a substance abuser.

I think some of the posters are missing the point. The tendency to develop alcoholism and/or drug addiction are often hand in glove with a dependent personality, and all are genetic.
The genetics are there. It's one of those "nature vs nurture" things. However, according to Obama himself, in his childhood there was very little "nurture" involved.
All that be as it may, people can and do become the exception to the rule.

His father did not live with him so he was not an influence in his life. He did not experience the kind of instability and erratic behavior that causes the suffering and behavior in the child, so that is not a factor in his development. He is not an adult child of an alcoholic as that classification requires that the parent be there exhibiting the behavior. Please stop trying to put yourself out as an expert when it is obvious you have no background in this field. There is a lot else you have missed, but I don/t have time to waste with this

His genes would make him more susceptible, but if he hasn't shown signs of it yet it's unlikely this will occur. You try to make it sound as though he was a drooling drug addict. He used pot and coke as a young man, like millions upon millions of our sons and daughters. He was not "addicted." George Bush is an alcoholic, and he did cocaine as well. Did you find him to be troublesome because of the possibilities that he might have to rip the top off some Ripple or do a line when he was under pressure - like an addict might do? You know you didn't. Why start now? Couldn't be irrational hatred could it? Oh, no, of course not.

Kadel, the pre-disposition to substance abuse is a genetic make up, not a learned trait. Much as depressive parents and schizophrenia runs in family genes. Alcoholism does not work like abuse, which is a learned trait. Obama has a good chance of becoming one but will he? We will have to wait and see.

Plus he has the added stress of being on the down-low. Larry Sinclair testified they smoked crack together in 1999 before oral sex, with a repeat performance in Obama's hotel room the next morning, and he has had other partners. I don't think that stopped with the election.
