Would a doctor suggest that a woman not have kids if she has an overactive thyroid disorder?

A woman I work with already has one kid and is pregnant with another. I overheard her telling another co-worker the other day that when she got pregnant with the first one that her doctor told her that she shouldn't be having any kids because of her thyroid problem but since she was already pregnant that she definitely shouldn't have any more after the first one. I was just wondering if a doctor would really advise someone with a thyroid problem to not have kids at all. I thought they'd just watch you more carefully and they had medicine to help with it. I was curious cause I know this woman exagerates things sometimes and it aroused my curiousity. Does anyone know or know of a similar situation?? Thanks

I know a co-worker of mine had the same problem arise after the birth of her baby girl, and she was waiting until the problem was in control before having another one because that's what the doctor recommended. So I'd say it is possible to get that advise in that situation.

I was diagnosed with multiple thyroid issues shortly after the birth of my first child. Since that time I've had two more children. I did ask a doctor before I got pregnant with my 3rd if there was any reason not to try for another baby and she said no. They would just monitor me and if for some reason I had to have the thyroid removed they'd wait until after the baby arrived. They still haven't removed it. Anyway, I'm not sure what her condition is but I suspect she is exaggerating.

I have the same thing they never told me that i couldnt have kids they just have been keeping a watch on it. and now i am pregnant with my 5th. I am 21 weeks and 4 days now

The choice of whether or not to have children, when it has been medically discourage, is huge. But a doctor's advice is not the bottom line when it comes to motherhood.

It's all on the woman's shoulders. Truly. Fifteen doctors can tell a woman not to have a child but if that woman wants a baby, she will move heaven and earth and take her life in her own hands in order to bring a child of hers into the world.

That's just the way it is. If this woman's thyroid is out of control there are lots of side issues that may go along with pregnancy, in other words, the pregnancy may cause her condition to spiral more out of control, but thyroid is a controllable condition.

While I would never accuse a pregnant woman of exaggerating anything, I believe it is most likely that her doctor told her to postpone pregnancy until the thyroid thing is resolved.

Your question is a good one. Which begets another, which I am going to post next because I can not think of a single thing that would have kept me from having a baby.
