Food Suggestions for Feline Urinary Tract Syndrome...?

Does anybody have a food recommendation for cats with reoccuring urinary tract health problems? AND I hate the crap that Purina and Science Diet put in their prescription foods...and that is ALWAYS what the vets suggest! Does anybody know what is actually in these "prescription" foods that is supposed to work???

I am having the problem specifically with my large male cats? I did my research after another cat of ours had to have the PU Surgery (AKA The sex change for kitties)...found what I thought to be the best food for urinary tract health (Wellness Core - high protein, low carb/grains, low magnesium, NO ash) and now my youngest...who hasn't even hit a year just went in for a partial obstruction. I am hearing a lot of positive things about this herbal supplement - http://www.nativeremedies.com/petalive/u...

Opinions & suggestions please??

Thanks Desaraye! Do you know specifically what part of the formula within Science Diets CD helps the breakdown of crystals/stones? And what about cats with enlarged hearts or genetics for heart disease in the future? CD has a higher salt content which isn't as good for the heart...

Most cats dealing with FLUTD do well on a high protein, low carb, and grain free wet food diet. You many want to look into these while switching food. I am uncomfortable with giving out brand names when it comes to cats with special dietary needs as a result of certain medical conditions.

I do suggest however, that you join a FLUTD support group here on Yahoo. The members have extensive knowledge on how to feed and care for cats with this condition as well as links to important information and educational resources.

Royal Canins S/O has less salt in it than C/D.
The only issue with the S/O diet is you can only feed the dry or only feed canned.
They can not be combined.
Males with a history of uethral obstructions/FLUTDs do marvelous once this diet is introduced.
These diets balance the pH of the urine while dissolving or inhibiting stone/crystal formation.
These diet have been shown to work and nothing over the counter will give you the same benefit.

Cats with FLUTDs or FIC should be on cosequin and omega fatty acids.
Cosequin is a glucosamine and chondrotin supplement that lubricates the bladder wall while decreasing inflammation.
Omega fatty acids disrupt the inflammatory response decreasing the amount of discomfort a cat or dog will feel.

These therapuetics diets have been tested and have data to back it up.
They will keep your cat comfortable and ideally in the litter box!

Ooooo, good question. This problem has plaqued vets for years. We suggest Science diet c/d mostly, and yes it does work. It's formulated to change the pH in the bladder to help prevent crystal and stone formation. No over the counter diet is going to do the same thing. Also, studies have shown that Cosequin for cats (diet supplement at your vet) has really helped keep the bladder from being irritated.

Don't blame you about the SD crap. Our Oci got a UTI - he's on Royal Canin for Urinary (much better) and selected canned food - Wellness, Natural Balance, Max Cat, Avoderm, Iams and Blue Buffalo.

We stick to chicken, beef, lamb, or venison. He has not had a reoccurance since.

Try a raw food diet consisting of raw chicken wings... my co-worker said it did wonders to her pets suffering from ill health...

I dont have any suggestions about food. But, I did want to share with you my experience using Tripsy. My cat has always had kidney problems and we tried changing her diet to one of those prescription ones but that did'nt even help her! We eventually bought a bottle of Feline Tripsy online and it has worked wonders for her. I try to recommend it to anyone I know that has a cat with kidney issues.

Here's the link if you want more info: http://www.petwellbeing.com/cat-kidney-d...

Tripsy for cat kidney disease is very effective, especially in combination with traditional treatments. Tripsy contains a powerful combination of herbal extracts proven to:

Promote healthy kidney functioning
Fight kidney infections
Improve urinary flow
Reduce the pain and discomfort of kidney stones
