I have a UTI (urinary tract infection) and i'm peeing blood- what next? |
I have a UTI. Just went to the pharmacy and got my antibiotics about 15 minutes ago. This UTI is extremely painful but I didn't think it was that bad.... until I got home and started pissing blood. Bleeding can occur with a UTI. It's called hematuria. If you told your doctor about the pain, there should be 2 meds. One would be for phenazopyridine (Pyridium or Urogesic). In the meantime, increase your water intake to 3 liters a day and avoid cranberry juice. I'll tell you why. Most UTIs are caused by E. coli and E. coli is an acidophile. Acidophilic bacteria thrive in acidic environments and drinking cranberry juice creates that and prolongs a UTI. And I agree that you can use an OTC like Uristat for temporary pain relief but you can use these for only 2 days. Pyridium, Uristat, etc. do discolor the urine orange, red, or reddish-orange. The antibiotics should take care of the infection. I've had the blood in urine before and a regular course of antibiotics will get rid of an infection in that stage. You just have to give time for the antibiotics to start working. Within 24 hours you should feel fine. Until then, you can go the drug store and get Uristat or Azo-Standard to help relieve the symptoms (these medications will turn your urine orange/red but don't mistake that for blood). A little blood is what to be expected , since you do have an infection. Did your doctor call in the antibiotics? If so .... drink plenty of water and drink some cranberry juice.....NOT the stuff full of sugar , read the lable for 100% pure juice. That should help also. Usually this kind of thing is no real big deal , but keep an eye on it and if your problem seems to get worse , get to your doc. After all you are worth it! |
