How do I know whether it's a yeast infection or something else?

I've had some minor itching down there recently, but didn't really think anything of it. I thought maybe it was the soap I use or something. But this morning, I woke up & I had some serious itching going on down there. It's around the uhm.. vaginal opening. I've also been having some hot flashes (I'm only 21) & I thought that was weird. I don't have any other symptoms. No weird discharge (that I know of), no weird smells, nothing. Just this horrible itch. I had to scratch it earlier & when I did, it burned. Now it's kind of uncomfortable when I tighten my muscles down there.

I did have unprotected sex a week ago. Does this sound like a yeast infection or and STD/STI?

Also, I was on MetroGel but it was prescribed on March 19th. I heard that MetroGel could cause a yeast infection. But would it be this late?
